Things that Represent Each Semester

This is more like a mind dump of things, but thinking back I actually have things I strongly associate with each semester of my college life thus far:

  • Fall 2015:
    • Touhou 15 Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom: I played this a lot since it had just come out (and I literally joined the fandom right as it came out). I also played it a lot whenever I was bored OR upset, which is funny since this game is built around grinding and frustration. Somehow it worked.
    • Meeting my immediate set of friends working on programming projects
    • Performing in EChO with two strangers-turned-friends, though we haven’t seen each other since. I hope you guys are doing well, Sam and Kirsten!
  • Spring 2016:
    • Most unmemorable semester, honestly
    • Verilog I, II, and III projects in Architecture, in which I went for a “faster” implementation style (pipelining), and got a worse grade than if I had done it the “dumb” way (state machine). Hey, at least I built character!
      • I remember getting so frustrated I walked all the way to Coco’s from my apartment and had some sad boba alone
  • Summer 2016:
    • Painful onions: Initiative at work led to layers upon layers of unraveling complexity/bugs.
  • Fall 2016:
    • The Union building: I commuted from home this year, so long days were spent working in the Union’s 3rd floor, particularly on…
    • Operating Systems: Is and probably will be my favourite class of undergrad. Great professor, fun projects, high-ranking scores on the tests = I like the class.
      • I find great satisfaction conquering what most people consider the most difficult undergraduate class.
    • Touhou Shining Shooting Star: A Chinese Touhou fangame I played a lot in the Union when I was slacking off.
    • Almost 4.0 semester, thanks to PL -.-
    • 泠鳶yousa: Chinese “youtuber” I discovered Bilibili that does covers of various anime/vocaloid songs as well as originals.
  • Spring 2017:
    • Algo: In which our professor is not very good at teaching and I get carried entirely through the class by friends.
    • UTeach: In which I try out teaching elementary kids for a semester, which was really fun despite the initial nerves
    • Vision: MATLAB fun
    • Buying parts for my own computer build
  • Summer 2017:
    • Golang: Used it heavily at work. Very good language for certain domains, questionable design decisions in other domains.
    • Touhou Hidden Star in Four Seasons: The first Touhou game to be released while I was part of the fanbase. Played the demo heavily throughout the summer, and it was fully released right at the end of the summer. As such, I’ve strongly associated the first 3 stages with this summer, especially the Stage I theme “A Star of Hope Rises in the Blue Sky”, which gives me intense nostalgia for the summer whenever I hear it. It’s strange, because this game is still less than a year old at max at the time of writing. The power of ZUN music, I guess.
  • Fall 2017:
    • Advanced Operating Systems: In which I decide to inflict more OS pain on myself on purpose, and get an A. Character!
    • 4.0 semester! My first and hopefully not only.
    • Flying to Seattle for an interview and getting the job!
  • Spring 2018:
    • Developing…
